PINE BLUFF, AR --
Dashcam video allows us to hear a shaken Officer Brandon Greene.
While on duty on Dollarway Road Wednesday morning, Greene said a dog ran out in front of his patrol car. He said he couldn't avoid it."Why couldn't have I hit Bambi? I wouldn't cry over Bambi?" Greene asked himself in frustration.
The dog appeared to suffer miserably from the hit and officers at the scene questioned what to do next.
"I ain't got the heart to put him down and I'm not going shoot my gun because I'm not doing that report. If we were on a dirt road somewhere, I wouldn't mind."
Greene alerted his supervisor, Sergeant Edna Butler, who told an officer at the scene to slit the dog's throat. Butler wrote in her report, "This immediately relieved the dog of its pain and suffering."
You may remember Butler. In April, she responded to a house where a mother called for help to subdue her son, erratic from drug use. Butler, along with paramedics, struggled with Kendrick Baldwin.
In order to calm him down, Butler gave the paramedic her taser gun to use on Baldwin. Following our report on the tasing incident, the chief demoted her from lieutenant to sergeant. Now police are investigating whether the killing of the dog followed proper procedure.
Butler voluntarily took a leave of absence, according to the human resources director.
The police department is still investigating whether any of the officers did anything wrong.
