LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Some Little Rock police recruits take a break from extensive training to serve.

The future police officers served Christmas dinner at Dorcas House.

Dorcas House is a shelter for women and children to escape from domestic violence.

Leaders with the force say today gives the recruits another look at what police officers do.

"It's more than just arresting. Ninety percent of the time, it's what we're going to be doing -- doing community service.  It's no better time to get them acclimated to that than now," Lt. Earnest Whitten said.
