PULASKI COUNTY, AR -- Robin Dorey not only teaches second grade, but she's also voting in the district's Personnel Policies Committee election.

That's the committee put in place when state leaders decided to no longer honor the two unions who represented teachers and support staff.

"Most school districts in Arkansas have a PPC. I think they can be very effective," Dorey said.

Dorey said the PPC is more effective because unions come with a hefty price tag.  District leaders say they couldn't get out of fiscal distress with the unions' financial demands.

"We had a nice perk going but with the professional growth classes. I took them. I taught them," Dorey said.

Many of the teachers and support staff that are represented by the unions are not going along with the election. So when they get one of the ballots, they're writing, 'Represented by PACT and PASS,' which is essentially a no vote."

"They're moving on like everything it's peaches and cream," said Brenda Robinson, acting president of the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers.

Robinson said the district acts like they're not in a lawsuit with the unions.  They hope a judge rules PCSSD violated its contract by de-certifying the unions.

"We're just waiting to go to court and move our agenda," Robinson said.

An agenda that could bring major changes.

"We're going forth with the election but we know there's a court case still out there," Dorey said.

What are referred to here as union "demands" are not unreasonable at all. We want to keep, for example, our right to not have anonymous complaints used against us, for those could be simply made up -- and this right costs nothing. We also wanted our superintendent to take a pay cut himself (he collects $215,000 + benefits), but he refused to do so, despite the claim we are in "fiscal distress." We petitioned Gov. Beebe, and he did not respond. Now, we are petitioning Congress for a nationwide cut to administrators' salaries. You may find the petition here. Please read it, and, if you agree, sign and share it.
