I recall back in the 60's and 70's seeing everyone smoking while pumping gas. Guess gas back then wasnt flammable. LOL.

TechGuy is correct, saw the update on the 10:00 news, and a fire chief I believe, said it was static electricity. Now smoking on the other hand while filling up.....
