LITTLE ROCK, AR – Police are investigating an alleged rape that occurred in the River Market early Saturday morning.

According to the report, the victim told police she met her attacker at Willy D’s Rock ‘n Roll Piano Bar. The two went outside to his car where the victim says the attack happened.

Afterward the victim and her sister reported the incident to a police officer working in the area.

Sgt. Cassandra Davis with the Little Rock Police Department says this isn't the first crime that has happened in the area in the past 3 weeks. "We've had a couple robberies or car-jackings where individuals were leaving different restaurants or businesses in the River Market and their cars were stolen."

But Sgt. Davis says crime is not a problem exclusive to the area. "The River Market District is safe. Crime occurs in the River Market just like it does anywhere else in the city."

Josh Quattlebaum works in the River Market and says he and his fellow employees make sure to walk in groups to avoid becoming a crime statistic. "It shakes you up that it's out there. It kind of makes you have an uneasy feeling when you're walking by yourself."

Marianna Lockard likes to come down to the River Market as much as possible and says she never feels uncomfortable. "I think if you look at the broader picture crime happens in every neighborhood."

Sgt. Davis says crime shouldn't stop anyone from patronizing the River Market District. "Enjoy the restaurants, the shopping, mingling, and socializing. We ask you just always be on your guard because there are people out there who want to take advantage of the situation."

Police are checking out surveillance video from Willy D's Saturday night to get a better look at the rape suspect. The victim says her attacker only identified himself as Shawn. The police report says he is 28-years-old, 6’0” tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a tan shirt, blue jeans, black boots, and a red hat.

Police do have extra presence in the River Market District, particularly at night when the bars let out.

Agree with Butch. Hey guzzler, many of us have been there and done that! Thank goodness I never had to chew my arm off!

Let me say this to the real men out there. If she says no it's no. Anything else is rape.

I've woke up with a few that the darn Tequila bottle picked out for me and couldn't get out of there fast enough, but I wouldn't call it rape

Sounds like seller's remorse (after she sobered up) more than rape.

I agree that the defense attorney will latch on to the fact that she went outside with him. Of course, that still doesn't make it right. Not knowing more about the situation other than what I've read here, I can't say why she went out with him. I can say there could definitely be reasons other than sex. A ride home, to grab another pack of cigarrettes, gum, drugs, a cell phone.... I don't recall her age (maybe it is listed, I'm not sure) but she could just be young & naive - who knows?!

I agree; no excuse for rape, none whatsoever. But the things you mention - short skirts, being out late at a bar, going outside with a stranger; I have to agree with someone else also; the defense attorney will have a field day with this one. I guess she changed her mind. I wonder if he had been different in his approach, maybe she would have given it to him? Why else did she go outside with him? Saw on the news last night; in the last 6 months, over 600 police reports in the River Market. Some jewel!

Going with someone you don't know to their car may not be the smartest thing. However, that does NOT necessarily make the women "willing". How asinine to blame the victim because she made a bad choice. Short skirts, being out late, meeting someone you don't know, etc...none of that makes it okay to force a women into sex when she doesn't want it. NONE of that makes it okay!

Here's a GREAT idea...leave a bar with a stranger after midnight on Friday in the River Market district. A defense attorney is going to have a field day with this one.

A red hat? What was he, a pimp? ( Lot's of red caps in this state; but a red hat? ) LR keeps pumping money into the River Market in an attempt to make it the jewel of the city. And you still have carjackings, assualts, robberies, and rape. Give it up LR; you can't have a "jewel" in a pile of garbage.
