After a mother took a wrong turn and drove into a lake, people are wondering why there isn't something to stop cars from dring into the lake. The accident took the lives of three boys.  The number one question in this tragedy is why isn't there something to stop cars from driving into the lake.

"They can't be replaced, but if there were barriers, they'd be with us today,” says Larry Hopkins, the victims’ uncle.

Instead, Larry Hopkins the Second is putting up a memorial where his three nephews, eight year old Aaron, seven year old Alex, and two year old Anthony, drowned.

"Something’s got to be done about signs and barriers to keep people from driving into that lake,” says Hopkins.

FOX16 went to Conway County Judge Jimmy Hart to get answers about who owns the gate.

"This is basically where Johnny Walker Road terminates. So who's responsible for the rest of the road? Well, Ma'am basically if you look at the sign right here that has the warning that has the warning notice. It says Conway Corporation, that's basically who has the responsibility. So it's the city of Conway?Yes Ma'am,” says Judge Hart.

The only warning this sign gives is no camping and no swimming. Right now, Conway's mayor said he doesn't want to comment until he sees the full report from investigators. Conway County sheriff's deputies also say there have been at least two other accidents involving cars driving into the lake in the past two years.

"You know this isn't the first incident that's happened there. Why does it take three boys dying to finally get something about it,” says Hopkins.

“It's tragic what happened, everyone's sick about it, there obviously needs to be attention paid to that,” said Judge Hart. “We're going to look at it, possibly to put signage up here. And I'm going say this again, what you're looking at is a gate and that gate belongs to the county."

"I pray to God they do something to prevent it from happening to somebody else. To prevent them from having to go through what we are dealing with here," said Hopkins.

Police say alcohol wasn't involved in this deadly crash. The mother is not facing any charges at this time. The bodies of the three boys are at the crime lab right now. The autopsies showed no signs of foul play.

Graveside services are set for 2pm Thursday, April 23rd at Middleton cemetery in Birdtown. Visitation is from 6-8 Wednesday night. You can leave the family a condolence by clicking here. Once you are on the page, just click on Aaron, Alex, Anthony Turley.
The Conway County deputies are saying the death of three little boys was an accident. Eight-year-old Aaron Turley, 7-year-old Alex Turley and 2-year-old Anthony Turley, drowned after their mother drove her car into Brewer Lake early Sunday morning.

A make shift memorial has grown, people stopping by to leave teddy bears and candles in memory of the three little boys. The death of the boys is taking a toll on everyone in the community.

Rhonda McKellar was in bed around 3:30 Sunday morning when she was awakened by someone beating on her door.

“They were pounding on the door. She was in hysterics and she said the kids were trapped in the vehicle.”

The woman McKellar is talking about was Amber Turley and her car was in Brewer Lake. She managed to get her three boys out of the car. At one point she had all three of them by her side but she wasn’t able to get them out of the water.

“Somehow they were all holding on to belt loop or something and they came off. And when she turned to try and get him, she lost the baby and then the next thing she knew she couldn’t find the other,” says Mike Smith, Conway County Sheriff.

Charton Road is where Amber was supposed to turn but for some reason when she made it there, she missed her turn and kept going straight on Johnny Walker Road. Seconds later, Amber’s car plunged into Brewer Lake with her and her three boys still inside.

“She told us she had missed her turn. The conditions were rainy. I know that when I was on my way over there it was raining pretty hard,” says Sheriff Smith.

Turley’s family says the situation was made worse because it was dark out and Turley has never been down to the area. She had no idea that the road dead ended into the lake. There are no warning signs.

McKellar hopes this changes because she doesn’t want to see anyone else go through what this family is experiencing.

“I grieve for her,” says McKellar.

While police are saying this could be an accident, it is still being investigated by Conway County Sheriff’s Department and Arkansas State Police. They were in the area Monday and pulled a chunk of road out of the water. This could possibly be some sort of evidence to help them understand what happened.
PLUMERVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The great-grandmother of three boys who drowned in an Arkansas lake says their mother missed a turn while traveling home after a night out with friends and plunged into the water from an unfamiliar road that had been converted into a boat ramp.

The local sheriff says the mother's story has checked out so far and there was no indication of foul play.

Investigators resumed interviews today to determine why Amber Turley's car entered the water at the abrupt end of Johnny Walker Road.

Turley's great-grandmother, Margaret "Dean" Whatley of Plumerville, tells The Associated Press that Amber was out visiting friends when she was driving home around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Whatley says her granddaughter apparently missed a turn and ran into the lake.

Conway County Sheriff Mike Smith said today there was no reason to believe the deaths of 8-year-old Aaron Turley, 7-year-old Alex Turley and 2-year-old Anthony Turley, 2; were suspicious.

Smith has declined to say whether deputies conducted a field-sobriety test on the mother or drew any of her blood after the crash.

The car was pulled from the water yesterday and is being stored at a garage at the sheriff's department.

No STHOMAS I am not a moron....and yeah I do know her ..as a matter of fact I know them all and I still live here unlike you....You get your information 2nd or 3rd hand so you dont know as much as you think either. And your right if she was drunk We cant punish her anymore God will handle that and if she goes to jail it will be for more than a little while I can promise you that.If you still lived here and knew as much as you think you do, you would know Conway Corporation is responsible for Lake Brewer...It is Conway's water supply so they are responsible for changes made.If she was under the influence she could of ran into a tree and killed them just as quick as the water so then would we be blaming mother nature? Also I never said in my post she was drunk did I?!

Yeah SoSad, you seem to know EVERYTHING don't you? You're a typical moron that is going to want to make a bigger deal about this than is already being made, let the poor kids rest and you small minded morons stop thinking the worst. Did you even know her SoSad? or are you some moron who thinks you know what you're talking about? The other thing is even is she was drunk you can't punish her anymore than shes already been punished, sure she can be sent to jail for a little while, but even that can't replace her children, who she did love. This entire thing is a horrible accident, and if Conway County, or even the State of Arkansas would have taken care of this problems years ago then we wouldn't be on this website posting about this. The fat losers in Morrilton Council can accept grants of 1.5 million dollars, or make conway county residents pay insane property taxes for EVERYTHING, but they cant spend the $500.00 to put a gate up? If this is anyones fault it's theirs.

ATurley was familiar with the area..She lived only a few miles away...Raised in the area..The road is dangerous to those who have not traveled it before and does need a speed bump halfway down with signs to make people aware of the lake especially at night...She had been down this road before regardless of what her family tells she was very familiar with the area. Even if u turn on the wrong road by accident if u were a sober, normal person wouldnt u realize u were going down hill when the road to ur house does not go down hill? Rain does not prevent u from knowing when u are traveling down hill. This road is also not a road you could just accidentally vear onto....

You people who point the finger and play the blame game really annoy me. I know the mother and the father, and the 3 little boys were my cousins..nobody knows exactly what happened unless you were there. I also know that the boys were not thrown from the car and you people who act like you know everything should be ashamed of yourselves. The mother pulled the boys from the car trying to get to shore, and when one slipped away from her she did what every panicked person would do..she tried to grab him and thats when she lost the baby, and the other child as well. I want you people who act like you could have got the children out to take this into your small minded brains..Have you ever been in a car in water, in the middle of the night, while it was raining? If not just close your eyes and that's what you would see in Lake Brewer...NOTHING! so stop acting like you negative smalled minded people know everything! and stop following every little media false lead that you read about, wait for the facts. The bottom line of this is that if this problem would have been taken care of years ago by either state, or local government then 3 little boys would still be alive, but now we're going to see the blame game, and who should have done this and who should have done that. I feel for you Amber and I hope you all get through this rough time. Scott Thomas

mommymayi, this is a pretty serious accusation. if you have information, valid information not speculation or opinion, then you need to be talking to the S.O. or ASP and not just flappin your lips in this forum...i don't know this family, and even if i did there is absolutely no way for me to KNOW what happened unless i witnessed it. DID YOU? AND IF YOU DID WHY DIDN'T YOU HELP THESE POOR CHILDREN? AND IF YOU DIDN'T THEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TOOK PLACE EITHER! so mind your tongue else you may have to eat your words.

truly sad to lose your children and basically right in front of your eyes..horrific. i wasn't there, so i can't know if alcohol was a factor, i hope not because that guilt will eat this mother up inside. but my other concern is why in the h*** wasn't there a barracade put up on this road to keep this from happening? just because YOU know it's there doesn't mean EVERYONE does. people get lost all the time on back roads, and in these curvy highways we have here, a sharp turn is inevitable. but yet nothing was there to deter this senseless kind of tragedy. i imagine if one of the hot shots in little rock had family who traveled this road, even a little bit, there would've been something to stop a car that missed this turn. ya think??? I DO!!
