HARRISON, AR – A prisoner being transferred from Ft. Smith to Baxter County managed to escape from the deputy who was transporting him. When he was found, the inmate had managed to remove his handcuffs and he had the deputy’s phone, according to the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says the deputy, Thomas Pahs, had slowed down for a traffic light near a Home Depot in Harrison. That is when 31-year-old Michael Howard escaped from the moving car.

Howard was returning to Baxter County on an outstanding felony warrant of arrest for Revocation on an original charge of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. The sheriff’s office says Howard has been booked into the county jail on 35 separate occasions since 1999.

Harrison police, Arkansas State Police, and Boone County deputies searched for Howard for about an hour and a half before finding him in a vacant lot near a Walmart. Howard had removed his handcuffs and was in possession of the deputy’s cell phone at the time of his capture.
