Riverfest: Safety is Priority

We are just days away from the largest popular musical festival in Arkansas. Riverfest kicks off this Friday and every year it draws hundreds of thousands of people to Little Rock and North Little Rock. But, among the crowd, people looking to spoil your fun.

The Rivermarket is getting ready for the seats to fill up with hundreds of thousands of people.

"Headline entertainment. Huey Lewis and the News, Arrested Development, Merle Haggard on Friday," says DeAnna Korte, Executive Director for Riverfest.

The list goes on. But something else on the line up, your safety.

"We have a very large security budget. It's very important to us when people come down here. They feel safe," says Korte.

Aside from hiring its own security, Riverfest is also partnering up with local law enforcement.

"We'll have a lot of officers in that area watching what's going on. In fact, anywhere you are, you can probably look up and see a police officer," says Lt. Terry Hastings, Little Rock Police Department.

Little Rock police says crime during Riverfest is generally low because people take precautions.

"We tell people, always just bring the items you need for that event. Don't bring your whole purse with all your items in it or your wallet with all your credit cards," Hastings says.

Police also mentioned when parking for the event, make sure you don't leave valuables in your car where people can see. Either put them in your trunk or don't bring them at all.

"Right now they're looking for GPS systems and radar detectors to be the two hot items," Hastings explains.

With a little common sense and staying aware, you can take the target off your back.

"Riverfest has gone on for many, many years. And it's something that we have as a standard operating plan. We know what to expect. We know how to handle it. We've done it so many times. We'll be there to make sure everyone has a good time," says Hastings.
