Road slide closes Hwy 7 south of Jasper

Authorities say part of a highway in northern Arkansas has been closed because land underneath the road collapsed.
JASPER, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say part of a highway in northern Arkansas has been closed because land underneath the road collapsed.

Arkansas Highway and Transportation said Tuesday a 125-foot section of Arkansas Highway 7 came down about 2.5 miles south of Jasper while a contractor for the department was repairing damage to the road that occurred during heavy rains in 2009.

Officials say only one lane of traffic was open at the time and no personnel, vehicles or equipment were involved.

A Newton County Sheriff's deputy says no injuries were reported.

Highway officials say traffic is being diverted off Highway 7 eastward to Vendor, then back to Highway 7 using Arkansas Highways 374, 123, and 74.

Highway officials estimate the damaged highway will reopen to motorists early next week.
