Sheriff: 74-year-old man shot 62-year-old neighbor in stomach

WHITTINGTON, AR - A man is in the hospital after his neighbor walked into his yard and shot him without warning, according to the Garland County Sheriff's Office.

Reportedly, the suspect, 74-year-old Clarence Lewis, walked into the yard of his neighbor, 62-year-old James Southard, and shot him in the stomach without warning with a small caliber handgun.

Southard was able to get the handgun away from the Lewis and used it to strike the suspect, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators have no been able to talk to Southard and they say Lewis is not cooperating so they don't know why Lewis shot Southard.

Lewis has been charged with attempted first degree murder and is being held at the Garland County Detention Center.
