SHERWOOD, AR - People living in the Austin Lakes on the Bay subdivision in Sherwood are upset the mayor tore down a barrier fence between their neighborhood and the Park Crest Apartment complex.

Sherwood Mayor Virginia Hillman says the fence wasn't well-maintained and needed to come down, but the Austin Lakes neighbors say the fence needs to be replaced.

Chad Poland lives in Austin Lakes on the Bay, a block from the fence separating the Park Crest Apartment complex from his neighborhood. He says tearing down the fence isn't safe. "Leaving it in the condition it's in right now, my 6-year-old kid or any other kid could walk over there and get a rusted nail in their foot." Mayor Hillman says the fence is on city property on a sewer main, and needed to come down for security reasons.

On Saturday, October 15th, Mayor Hillman along with volunteers tore the fence down, upsetting Poland and his neighbors at Austin Lakes. "We spent our time, our money as a neighborhood to keep the fence maintained. The Park Crest Apartment residents damaged their own fence, which fell onto our fence. There's a police report, and Mayor Hillman knows about it. A car crashed into the fence and damaged a support beam. Other than that, the fence was completely intact."

Park Crest Apartments put up their own fence at the end of August because a city ordinance requires separation between multi-family dwellings and single family residences.

Poland says the mayor told the volunteers who helped tear down the Austin Lakes fence they could have the lumber. "How can you give away something that doesn't belong to you? The residents of the neighborhood paid for that lumber, and that lumber belongs to us."

People living at Austin Lakes say they either want their money back, or want the city to rebuild the fence. They say they need the fence for protection. Poland and his neighbors say they've taken their concerns to the city council, but they say they don't feel like they're being heard. They say they've had problems with the residents at the Park Crest Apartments with gun shots and garbage thrown over on to their property. Neighbors at Austin Lakes say they need their own fence for safety.

I lived at Park Crest Apartments for over 3 years until a few months back and the claims the neighborhood behind it are making are just bogus. Never once did any of my vehicles or property get damaged/tampered with or did I ever feel my safety was at risk, otherwise I would've moved my family a long time ago. What's odd is kids from THEIR neighborhood come through that fence to play with the kids on property/shortcut through it, so it's just as likely their own kids are kicking the boards out of the fence since the residence of Park Crest obviously aren't welcomed over there and wouldn't have a reason to do so. As far as the "9mm bullet in the fence" goes? I never once heard a gun fired on that property, so you all need to quit shooting at Park Crest! Thank God that fence was there so you didn't hurt someone in the apartments. But in all seriousness, Park Crest is NOT a HUD property (get your facts straight) and the only issue I see is that it's predominantly black and that is the real issue here. I and my family are all white middle-class people and that's the only issue I can see that makes this property such an "abomination" to neighboring communities. The bogus crime claims etc. are a poor excuse and if you'd respect others the way you wish to be respected, you would find something better to do and more important issues to spend your time on. Thanks.

Come on people, if you want to be concerned citizens, at least take the initiative to be INFORMED, concerned citizens. Yes, the fence was taken down. The mayor, along with the Keep Sherwood Beautiful commitee, spent Saturday morning pulling down the side of the fence which belongs to the City of Sherwood. Park Crest apartments still maintains a privacy fence as required by code for screening reasons. Why is it being portrayed as though the fence was torn down entirely, leaving the poor residents of Austin Lakes vulnerable to the woes of the hood? It isn't as if there is absolutely nothing standing between the two. Park Crest's fence is still there. Also, fences are not required by the city for safety. The code clearly specifies the fence is required for screening only, simply to block the view of the surrounding residential areas from the apartment complex. I understand the concerns of the citizens of Austin Lakes on the Bay. I wouldn't want to live next a crime riddled apartment complex either, which is precicely why I wouldn't buy a house next to one and then depend on a wooden privacy fence for safety. Park Crest apartments were built and established before Randy Wiggins developed the neightborhood in question. There isn't a person living on south shore lane that moved in to their home and then were surprised by the the fact that they had just, in fact, purchased a 200,000 property that neighbors Sherwood's little slice of the ghetto.

I apologize for my comment about the fence. Yes Harley73, I do live in a neighborhood ( a nice one at that). We have no reason to discuss your neighborhood business @ our meetings because we live in differents cities.

the fence not only protected from a safety standpoint, it provided a little buffer between a nice neighborhood and a HUD ghetto apartment complex. Just remember, this is the same mayor that will want a sales tax increase soon

she tore it down, she needs to put it back up! Since when can a mayor destroy private property just b/c she thinks it's an eye sore?

@ gmama. It is apparent that you don't live in the neighborhood and have not attended any city meetings which are open to the public. A 9mm bullet was dug out of the center post of this fence which was torn down by the Sherwood mayor and others including a police offer. Why don't you call the Sherwood police chief and ask him about Park Crest Apartments and how many times they have responded to calls there.

@ 1gmama. This fence as you refer to it has already stopped a 9mm bullet which was pryed out of one of the center post and given to the Sherwood police chief. So had that fence been up then that bullet would have entered one the residents house. It is apparent that you don't live in the neighborhood where the fence was torn down the Sherwood mayor and others.

The City of Sherwood is getting out of hand with their decisions to allow the Mayors Office to do what ever they want to. This fence is just the tip of the iceburg. What about filling in the swamp on 107. This will change the area of Gravel Ridge to be renamed to "Lake Gravel Ridge". This Mayor doesn't have a clue. Thanks to Sherwood we had the worst flooding ever last year, I am worried it will only get worse in the years to come.

Sherwood PD refers to that apartment complex as "Crack Crest Apartments"! The mayor of Sherwood should be ashamed of herself for 1) taking the fence down that was paid for by the Austin Lakes POA, 2) offering the lumber to the volunteers and 3)thinking she is of some higher power! @1gmama....a fence is a start of keeping this neighborhood safe...apparently you are misguided!
