Shoppers cash in on tax free weekend

LITTLE ROCK, AR - It's the second biggest shopping season of the year. People are stocking up on back to school items during this weekend's sales tax holiday.

Shoppers are taking full advantage of the savings at retailers all over the state, stretching budgets while still loading up their carts.

At Wal-Mart, shoppers are cashing in on major savings on everything from notebooks and binders to pencils, pens, and markers. Wal-Mart shopper Richard McKenzie says the tax free weekend is great for the economy and for people struggling to make ends meet. "A lot of us have to work 2 jobs to support our families and children."

All apparel under $100 and all accessories under $50 is tax free this weekend. Mary Womack says she got pretty much everything she needed. "Notebooks, paper towels, and Kleenex."

Wal-Mart Manager Kevin Stephens says this weekend is almost like Christmas for shoppers who can save hundreds of dollars. "We liken this event to our day after Thanksgiving sale. People come in with that look in their eye. They're here for a reason and we try to take care of them as fast as we can."

Shoppers like Mary Womack say they only wish this tax free weekend could be extended. "I wish they'd do it for a week so that way not everybody has to rush out just on a weekend."

At JC Penney it's all employees on duty to help get customers checked out the long lines. The excitement builds as the receipt comes out showing just how much money customers saved. JC Penney Manager Theresa McGavran says there are some fantastic values. "We have a lot of summer clearance right now plus great deals on school uniforms not just kids, but teachers too."
