LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Environmental groups and an electric utility have agreed to settle their litigation over a $2.1 billion coal-fired electric generation plant under construction in southwestern Arkansas.

The Audubon Society and Sierra Club announced Thursday that Southwestern Electric Power Co. has agreed to mothball an older coal plant in northeast Texas to help offset pollution that the plant in Fulton will generate.

SWEPCO says the settlement enables the utility to proceed with construction and its plan to bring the plant online.

The utility also says it plans to file an agreement in federal court in western Arkansas on Thursday.
