PINE BLUFF, AR - Pine Bluff Police Officer Billy Bradley is charged with a felony of leaving the scene of an accident that left his son, Briston Bradley, blind.

"The first thing he said when he heard me, because he couldn't see, he just said, "Mama I wasn't driving," said Lori Mitchell, Briston Bradley's mother.

But he wouldn't say who was. Initial reports say Bradley was a passenger when 'someone' crashed this car on the side of the highway in October, 2011.

Investigators traced the driver back to Briston's father and, Thursday night, nine months after the crash, State Police arrested 42-year-old Pine Bluff Police Officer Billy Bradley.

"The decisions that you make, you've just got to be accountable for them," said Bradley.

Bradley is charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, reckless driving and inadequate insurance.

"Briston wouldn't have left him," said Mitchell. "Out of everything in the world, Briston wouldn't have ever left him."

Neither Bradley nor his lawyer will comment, but in his written statement to police he admits to taking sleep medicine before wrecking the car and leaving the scene.

Pine Bluff Police won't comment either but do confirm Bradley is still working as a patrol officer on the force.

"I don't know if it's crazy to say but I'm not mad at billy," said Mitchell. "I feel sorry for him."

And as Bradley waits for his court date, Mitchell and her son hope to start healing.

"My main focus now is praying for a miracle," she said.

The Commission on Law Enforcement Standards says an officer must be convicted of a felony to become ineligible to serve on the force. Any other disciplinary action up up to the police department.

This is a slap in the face to all fathers all over the world. Sounds like a lot of B.S., had to be more than sleeping pills. Probably another cop gone bad, but any way you look at it no father could leave his son if he loved him.

Tired; you have close personal friends that are thugs? Wow! I think I'd rather run with a better crowd. Now there was a time in El Paso, TX and San Antonio, TX when I hang with bikers that one could consider "thugs". Back in my party days, I partied with some 1 %er's that would turn a Crip or Blood white just by looking at them! They were the type that would slit your throat just for looking at them wrong; but I never had any problems with them. As long as you don't mess with them, they won't mess you up. Now though, I prefer the company of friends in a motorcycle ministry I belong to, and the company of my fellow veterans in the Patriot Guard Riders, and the company of my friends in ABATE of Arkansas. And there are some retired LEO's and current LEO's in some of these organizations that are upstanding citizens, as well as honest, hard working cops. My younger brother was an MP in the US Army, and he wasn't and isn't a thug. An ex brother-in-law was an LEO in Phoenix, and he wasn't a thug. Yes, you can fix stupid; it's called improving the gene pool by getting rid of the garbage. And I'm not talking about genocide either; I'm talking about people of all colors; the one's that are murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang bangers, tweekers, etc. Like one of my favorite commentors on this site says - joy juice solves the problem.

Like Sheriff Doc said yesterday; the actions of an offficer will reflect back on his department, and LEO's everywhere. NativeSon; your statement makes sense, but so does ender929's; I gave both of you a vote. As in all parts of society, there are the good and the bad; what have we had recently - a deputy ramming through a gate, we have 2 LR officers trying to have their trial on drugs moved back, we have the officers caught up in the Delta Blues sting; the list goes on and on. There are going to be bad seeds in police departments, and yes, they reflect back on those departments, and LEO's everywhere; but on the other hand, there are those that are honest, and put their very lives on the line for us everytime they go to work.

NatveSon, how many real criminals that this officer has arrested may be let go because of the untrustworthiness of this officer? Look at the disrepute being cast on honest officers because of this CRIME. He has now admitted that he had taken sleep medication before driving ( a criminal act, he fled the scene rather than take responsibility for his crime, he encouraged his son to lie about who was driving, also a crime, he costs the taxpayers a lot of money to investigate his CRIME, rather than admit to his actions, he intentionally lied to someone in order to get less than adequate insurance for his vehicle, he fled the scene and left his injured and blinded son behind). So this was not merely speeding, or some minor infraction of the law. I know some honest LEOs and this guy tarnishes all of them. This culture of covering up for other LEOs is criminal and demoralizing to crime ridden communities. This man's response to his criminal actions suggests that dishonesty is his immediate fallback position, and not his first offense. How many people has he lied about to help convict or to let go? Your comment is naive at best, but overlooks too many details.

It's sad that when some people read this story they never give encouragement or support for the victim, they just use the forum to trash the police. It's easy to know the ones who break the law on a regular basis because they jump at any opportunity to point a finger at a police officer who makes a mistake. They are sad, pathetic, little people. When they become the victim of a crime, let them call one of their buddies instead of a police officer and see how that works out for them. My prayers go out to the family, father, mother, and son, for healing and reconciliation.

The Pine Bluff Police Department is a joke from the Chief on down. It needs to be disbanded and done away with.

How long have the police been dragging their feet on this investigation? A civilian would've been arrested months ago. All of the recent arrests of LEOs in recent months have shown a pattern of disregard for the law, a a lack of any sense of ethics, and when an investigation does begin to lie about everything. And why shouldn't they? The penalties are laughable and the police do everything they can to minimize the extent of the crime if they can't cover it up. Even the police commentaries are a joke. If a civilian had committed this crime, the police remarks would've been ones of outrage over abandoning his injured son at the scene (obviously with instructions to lie; therefore impede the investigation and other additional felonies). Where are the other offenses listed that he should be charged with? Driving while impaired, etc.. A civilian would've had a least a dozen charges filed against him in the exact same situation. The Pine Bluff police have probably known for some time that this was indeed the case. I guess they'll try to find a way for him to plea bargain below the felony(s) so he can keep his job. Security guards are kept to a higher standard than this.
