PARAGOULD, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police has opened an investigation into the Greene County Sheriff's Department after state auditors questioned practices regarding an in-house donations fund.
State police spokesman Bill Sadler declined to comment Monday on the investigation, which began after prosecutor Scott Ellington referred the case.
The Jonesboro Sun reports that prosecutors sent a letter to state police that said Sheriff Dan Langston had maintained a cash account outside of the county's control and that it was not handled in accordance with basic accounting laws.
Langston has denied any wrongdoing. He says the in-house account is used to handle annual donations of about $1,000 that's to be spent on bulletproof vests and other equipment.
The investigation began because the donations account was not reported to state auditors.
