Stop Casinos Now files challenge

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Stop Casinos Now committee is trying to keep a proposed constitutional amendment from bringing casinos into Arkansas.

The committee filed a challenge with the Secretary of State's office to the proposed amendment Monday. The filing says Nancy Todd's proposed constitutional amendment would create and unregulated casino monopoly in the state, which the committee's lawyers say is illegal under federal law.

Nancy Todd says the committee is funded by Southland dog track, a business that doesn't want competition from casinos.

Committee spokesperson Robert McLarty says people who oppose casinos in Arkansas are very concerned about the structure of how the proposal is written and the impacts it will have on the state.

Nancy Todd of Nancy Todd's Poker Palace says the committee's only goal seems to be to make sure the people of Arkansas do not have a right to vote on this issue. "We're just trying to broaden what the people of Arkansas have for entertainment opportunities, and we specifically want them to have a chance to vote on it."

Todd's amendment names four counties for planned casinos, but McLarty says every county would be opened up for possible casinos in the future. "Clearly she's skipped over the process of meeting with community leaders and elected officials. She hasn't asked them if they want this and right now the answer is no."

McLarty says the committee represents politicians, lawyers, and Southland Dog Track. Todd says that brings special interest to a whole new level. "I certainly hope the voters have an opportunity to have their voice heard on this issue. That is something I think this process has denied them. The Attorney General already reviewed and approved the ballot language, so I don't think there's a whole lot to be challenged."

The next step in the process is for the Secretary of State's office to consult with the Attorney General. They have 30 days to make a determination.

Todd says she's confident the amendment will go to the voters. 80,000 petitions were turned in to the Secretary of State's office supporting casinos. Those signatures still need to be validated.

itsjustme; thanks for the tip, I'll look into it before I vote on it ( IF I get the chance to ) I'm with Butch; horses and dogs; what's the difference between betting on them, and playing in a casino? Like Butch says, someone has a monopoly going, and they don't want anyone getting some of "their" gambling proceeds. Me, never been to a casino, dog or horse race, and havent' spent a dime on the lottery. But I believe people should have that right if they so choose to gamble. I'm not sitting on a high horse either gang; I used to host poker parties; quarter limit, limit of 3 raises, nickle ante, only needed 5 bucks to sit and play for a few hours, and have fun. No one got shot or stabbed because they lost their paycheck.

Arkansas needs casinos and most of us want them. The reason why I will vote no on this if it makes it to the ballet is because Nancy Todd will NOT bring what we all know as a casino. She wants to bring in "poker palaces". She does not have the financial resources or overall knowledge to bring us what we want, a real casino. If Arkansas ever gets casinos, it needs to be done by the people that know how to do it, not some poker princess that wants the monopoly and all the financial benefits. I'm like those that are tired of Arkansas not having them, but please research what she is proposing before you vote. Dont vote for it just because you want a casino here, vote after you have researched it good.

I say let's have it all or none. No casinos no dogs and horses. Looks like a monopoly to me already. It's not to far to drive out of state to see a good horse race.

I like going to the casinos one or two times a year. I spend no more than if I was going out to eat and a movie. I don't care if she came here or not because someone from Arkansas could have done it. Sam Walton didn't live in all those other states either! I think if we are being laughed at it is because we drive to other states to play.Won 5,000 once and Arkansas made sure they got part of it. I have a right to vote on this because we are suppose to live in a Democracy NOT a Dictatorship! More entertainment sound;s great to me, guess if someone didn't like it they could stay home.

Same ol', same ol'. We've all seen it; something the citizens of this state wish to vote on; and someone in the state government, or state courts, says the wording isn't correct, etc. Gettin' their pockets lined at the same time maybe?
