DERMOTT, AR – Firefighters had to remain on scene until just after noon Sunday battling and monitoring a blaze that began Saturday afternoon. One firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion but there are no reports of any other injuries.

Incident Commander Mike Morgan says the Fred’s Discount Store is a total loss. More than a dozen area fire departments and other emergency agencies responded to the blaze but were unable to save the business at 205 East Speedway Street in Dermott.

Morgan says the store shift manager reported hearing a loud pop as the fire broke out coming from the rear of the store. She told him the noise came from the vicinity of the electrical panel. Morgan says the cause of the blaze is still under investigation but it does appear to have started in the rear of the structure.
