MENA, Ark. (AP) — Mena police have arrested a man in connection with a hit-and-run that seriously injured a 1-year-old girl.

Detective Brandon Martin said Thursday that police believe the girl wandered onto the street where she was hit by a truck just before 7:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say the driver left the scene while the girl was airlifted to the Arkansas Children's Hospital where a hospital spokeswoman said she was in serious condition on Thursday.

Police say the GMC logo of the driver's truck broke off at the scene. That fragment, combined with eyewitness accounts, led police to arrest a man Wednesday afternoon for leaving the scene of the accident.

Police don't think drugs or alcohol were involved and are withholding the man's name until charges are filed.

@ MrsMac72112-I have an eleven month old that does not toddle, she RUNS! You obviously have no children. Accidents do happen. In this case a horrible accident. The reason we are talking about this in this first place, is because the man that hit her RAN. I sure hope her parents don't read this blog, because it would break their hearts to know that there are people like YOU that think this is partly their fault. Shame on you...

One year olds do not run they toddle - how long was the attention off this child before she got into the street - Consider what the parents are going through you say - if the parents or care giver was unable to keep their attention on the child why wasn't this child in a safe enclosed yard or play pen or at least on some type of restraint. I say the cargivers of this child is equally to blame for this accident.

Prayers for the baby but where the heck was a parent, baby sitter or any responsible person that allowed a One Year old to run into the street. First a one year old does not run they walk no they toddle .. unless it was within 5 feet or less of the street she should have been caught before she got anywhere near the street. and if you are that close to the street that a toddler can get into the street unnoticed then someone should have had her hand. The driver should have never left the scene but someone was very neglegent in allowing this child to be in the street.

My husband and I have soon to be six daughter ages 15,14,10,5,2 and due in May and we can tell you that no matter what a parent does our children will be children and they will run into roads stick stuff up there nose ect I can go on and on about what a child will do and try no matter how good of parents we are. I don't know these parents of these two lil girls who got hit by this man on this day, but I can tell you one thing we need a change in this crazy mean world for it to get better we need people to learn how to pull together and be ONE in times like this and if your parents didn't teach you how to do this then learn from us it's call "WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE" THERE IS ONLY ONE JUDGE THAT I KNOW OF AND THAT'S GOD ABOVE SO FOR THE ONES WHO WANNA TRY AND PLAY GOD HE WILL DEAL WITH YOU LATER SO YOU ALL NEED TO THINK BEFORE YOU WANNA SAY SOMETHING!!! PRAYING FOR BOTH BABY LILLY AND PAYLON WE SEND OUR LOVE TO BOTH OF YOU AS WELL AS THE PARENTS STAY STRONG.

Let me start out by saying that I PRAY the lil miss Lilly makes a full recovery and my prayers are also with her mother and family....now, OMG....are you people serious?? There is precious baby girl lying in the PICU at ACH and all you can say is where was the mommy and daddy recouperating from the night before, and charges for both and this and that. Why don't you all start out by saying a little prayer for that baby instead of trying to place blame when you don't know what happened. Obviously you peolple don't have kids or must be saints or something because my child can be standing right beside me with me looking and talking to her and her take out running and be gone, the more you chase her, the more she runs. They don't understand that its dangerous, its a game to them. If you people would take less time placing blame, more time praying, and let the police do their job...we may just have a civilized place to live. There is a reason that just anyone can't be responsible for upholding the law and this is a prime example. Ms Thacker, if you read this, it takes a strong person to be in a PICU with their baby everyday and stay positive, stay upbeat, and not lose all sense of faith. You ma'am are a strong woman and I commend you. Prayers your way......Amanda in Forrest City, AR

I understand how a little one can get away from you in an instant. My youngest daughter is almost 2. She managed to pull away from me in a busy parking lot-almost caused me to stroke out. I can only imagine what would have been said of me had she been hit that day. You cannot imagine how sick it made me feel to know that even with my best intentions to keep her safe, she could have been lost to me. So lets focus our energy on thoughts and prayers for the family. How can anyone look at the image of Lilly lying in a hospital bed and think anything other than hope that she gets better. Why always think the worst of someone? Find your empathy, people. One day we could be on the receiving end of unwarranted accusations. Many prayers for Lilly.

Easy for some to get on here and make comments they would not dare say to any of Lilly's family face to face. Thoughts and prayers are with Lilly and we will deal with the other crap later.

When I heard this story my heart just broke. I am so glad that the little girl is going to be okay. Terrible accidents happen every day even under the most watchful of parents. My son was literally an arms length away and fell into the coffee table had to have stitches, my daughter closed her finger in the garage door while she was in my arms, stitches. ACCIDENTS DO JUST HAPPEN SOMETIMES. The small town/neighborhood I lived in, we had people speeding down our road all the time, and then to make the problem even more dangerous people would park on the street and so drivers couldn't see the kids playing near the streets. It is really EVERYONES responsibility to watch out for children! Kids are going to do things they shouldn't and be places they shouldn't be, but as adults we have to be watchful and protective of all kids all the time. It takes a village. And as a parent, I want children in my neighborhood and my own children to feel safe crossing the road and playing with their friends in our yard. That's why we choose the town we live in and the neighborhood we NOW live in, no one is allowed to park on the street, and we hire an off duty cop to give speeders tickets. I just pray we all learn to be more loving and careing of other people, and that this precious baby grows up to be a strong and health young lady.

Each and every one of you being so judgemental must be PERFECT parents, right?!!? I don't know this family, but my heart breaks for them & I'm praying for the best for your little girl. I have 5 year old twins and just like any mother or father, I can't keep my eye on them 24/7 but I sure try, so does that make me a bad parent b/c I've watched my child fall down while playing in the street or fall off their bike?!? It's called and accident people, but since you are all "perfect", I'm sure you've never had one, right?!? And everyone wonders what is wrong w/our country, lets all point fingers and place blame on someone we know nothing about and make ASSumptions on her life. Don't let these people get to you, keep your head up and stay strong for your little girl.
