I wish to encourage every parent of the LRSD to email the board members, requesting a vote NO on the Revision to Student Handbook: Possession/ Use of Paging Devices, Cellular Phones, and/or Other Electronic Devices on August 26, 2010.

I have read the comments that have been left about the cell phones in school topic. I do understand all points-of-view, however, being a parent with a student zoned for a school that has had issues with violence and criminal activity, I do feel safe knowing that my child has a cell phone in her possession. I talk to her everyday about the safety, importance, and responsibility of having a cell phone. I like to think that she listens to me. They do random scans at the school where they collect cell phones. Thankfully she has not been in trouble with her phone. My daughter is a senior this year and will be leaving school early to go to work, but she does not drive yet. It is important to me that she can communicate with me when we are apart.

I changed my mind on cell phones and schools when the bus my children were on was in a wreck. It was getting very late and they still weren't home, so I called several phone numbers and finally learned of the accident. The school hadn't called any parents. They have carried cell phones ever since and will continue to.

In LRSD they do random searches, even if a student keep their phones off and in the locker they will take their phones. For everyone who is saying when we were kids, things are alot different now. When I was growing up there wasn't gangs that I knew of, teachers taught, and adults cared enought to make sure we were safe. Now some teachers have sex with students. Parents is not making excuses why thier children should have cell phones its about knowing where my child is and knowing that I always have connect with them. Just this summer my child had practice at school and no adult was out there with them and there was problems happening. The security guards at the school are perverts looking at our daughters. They should be able to keep their phones on them just off.

bloomfever2002, did u attend a high school with 2500 students? Mostly likely not. Have you ever been in a fight? What happened, your parents were called and you got your butt whipped when you got home. Now the police is called b/c its now called assult or battery. More and more sexual perverts are lurcking on a childs stomping ground. Back then, one would spank another child, do that today and see what happens. Its not 1960/1970 or even 1980 any more. Times change and we must adjust or get left behind.

When I was in school we didnt have phones. If we were sick the school nurse knew before school statred that she might need to check on us. There was a phone in the main office for us to call home if needed. Cell phones are a privalege not a right. There is absoulutly no reason a child needs a phone in the school. Locked up in thier lockers is fine, but use of it during lunch or whenever can cause envy to others and possible fights when one student shows off thier new iphone to someone who cant afford one. (We were all there once kids are cruel). I think this is a great idea and think parents need to remember when they were kids and stop acting likre this is the end of the world and to the kids..your friends are there in school with you..who do you need to call?

PHONES SHOULD BE ALLOWED THEY SHOULD--TURNED OFF OR IN THE LOCKER OR EVEN TURNED IN TO A STAFF UNTIL SCHOOL IS OVER---KIDS HAVE A LOT OF ACTIVITY AFTER SCHOOL AND ME BEING A PARENT I WANT TO KNOW WHERE MY CHILD IS AT ALL TIME?

Phones should be allowed. My daughter has rode the bus for the last 4 years, 7th grade - 10th grade. I leave home at 7am....she catches the bus at 8:10am. The bus is often LATE! So is she suppose to run home to call me or just use the cell phone to call me. Phones should be OFF and out of sight. If seen by a teacher or administrator the phone should be taken for 3 days, 1st offense. This year (11th grade) she will drive to school and has been instructed to leave the phone in the car. Some of us can't take and pick up our kids, we rely on public transportation.

the excuses parents come up with to allow a kid to carry a cell phone amazes me. If they have a medical condition, that is why there is a school nurse and by the way- the school has a phone in the office. My kids did not have cell phones until they were old enough to buy it themselves and sign for their own plan. Cell phones are not necessary in any form, they are a crutch. Odd we got by without them? I think if they are caught with them, they should be confiscated and kept for good, not even the parent can get them back. School is no place for cell phones.
