HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — A trial is set to begin for the man charged in last year's shooting death of a 17-year-old Vilonia girl.

Cody Gorecke is charged with second-degree murder in the January 2011 death of Amanda Allison. Authorities say Gorecke and Allison were at a party in Wilburn when Gorecke allegedly showed off a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun to other party attendees.

Police claim Gorecke was intoxicated when the gun went off, striking Allison in the midsection. She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Gorecke has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. The Log Cabin Democrat reports that Gorecke's trial is set to begin Tuesday morning in Cleburne County Circuit Court.

@bat102...NO I DO NOT CONDONE THIS BEHAVIOR. Yes underage drinking is against the law and yes values start at home. I wonder what you were like as a teenager? Were you just so perfect and didn't do anything wrong or make a mistake? Did you ever go to a party and low and behold there was boose? I have never been arrested, I never stole and I had good grades and hung around good kids. We all said yes mam, no mam and had respect for elders. Most of us raised in churches and good family households. We were still kids and still curious about the things we were told not to do. Drinking a little drink is not the same as shooting a damn needle up your arm or huffing paint. Yes I did go to some parties and yes I did as a teen have some beers. It took one time for me to get drunk and I didn't like the feeling and chose not to get drunk again. My point is this..."we don't learn lessons unless we go through the experience ourselves" and its sad all this kids learned a tough lesson this way. I also don't believe its murder. I too believe negligent homicide.

From what I have read, this sounds more like a dumbass idea that ended with tragic results. Sounds to me that the guy was showing off a gun and somehow it fired. I havent read or saw anything that says he actually intended on firing the gun towards the young lady or anyone else. Being intoxicated or even drinking and handling any firearm is never a good idea. Whether or not he is convicted of murder, or anything else, will come out in the near future. But the guy already has a life sentence of having to relive this everyday, knowing that a stupid mistake cost a young lady her life. As far as the ones that ran off, hell, when I was a teen and a bunch of us were out drinking, when the law came up, we all hauled ass, and we didnt have guns, drugs or anything. Just a bunch of scared, drunk teens trying to avoid getting in trouble.

He may not have meant to shoot the gun. He may have not meant to harm anyone if he did intend to shoot it. I don't see how any charge with the word "murder" in it is going to stick. Negligence? Perhaps. Negligent Homicide? Not murder. (This is going by what I have read here - nothing else. There is always much, much more that we aren't told.)

@ Bat02...Kids will be kids and if there is a party they will try and attend. Its not the girls fault or the other kids fault. The only one at fault here is the shooter, he made the choice to show off, display the gun and fire the gun. It is a sad situation as well as a lesson to be learned. The other kids will never forget, they ran because they were scared, they were drinking. In light of a tragic situation, trauma effects people in different forms. Either way, the shooter is to blame. They are too many " what if's" that would have changed the situation but whats done is done. May God bless this girls family, may he have mercy on the shooters soul and I pray for all effected by it.
