Trumann police officer honored posthumously

Two police groups are honoring a Trumann police officer who died in the line of duty in April.

TRUMANN, Ark. (AP) — Two police groups are honoring a Trumann police officer who died in the line of duty in April.

The Jonesboro Sun reports family members of Jonathan Schmidt received plaques Wednesday from the American Police Hall of Fame and the Trumann Police Department during a ceremony in the Trumann District Courtroom.

Trumann Police Chief Tony Rusher says the Florida-based American Police Hall of Fame also will honor Schmidt by etching his name on its law enforcement memorial.

During the ceremony, Rusher read a proclamation from Gov. Mike Beebe honoring Schmidt.

Schmidt died April 12 during a traffic stop. Witnesses say Schmidt pushed his sergeant to safety after a passenger in the car shot Schmidt in the neck. Jerry Lard has been charged in the fatal shooting and has pleaded not guilty.
