We're about 30 minters away from tipoff here at the Jack Stephens Center for the an NCAA 1st round match up between #14 UALR and #3 Delaware.
To pull out a win, UALR will need to continue doing what's worked for them all season: Solid defense, and sharp shooting by super freshman Taylor Gault.
Asking a freshman to carry a team in an NCAA game is tough, but the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year proved she isn't afraid of the big stage.
I'll be updating the blog throughout the game, so be sure to check back.
***update 4:26 pm***
UALR's Marian Kursh has drawn the early assignment to slow down Elena Delle Donne. She's done a good job early, holding the nation's leading scorer to 2 points in the first 4 minutes.
Trojans lead 6-4 at the 15:50 mark.
UALR has cooled down and the Trojans haven't scored in almost 6 minutes. Meanwhile the Blue Hens are on a 13-0 run. Delle Donne has heated up, she has 9 points, and UD has a 17-6 lead with 11:52 left in the 1st half.
WOW. Delle Donne averages almost 30 points a game. In the 1st half today she has 20, as Delaware leads 32-22.
Marian Kursh has played an incredible half for the Trojans. She's been playing hard at both ends, and cleaning the glass, but she needs some help.
Star freshman Taylor Gault was held to 5 points, if she can get it going in the 2nd half, UALR might be able to close the gap.
Delaware has broken the game wide open, riding the hot hand of Delle Donne. The nation's leading scorer has 32 of her teams 49 points and the Blue Hens lead the Trojans 49-28 with 11:43 left in the game.
A tough 73-42 loss for the Trojans, but a great career for seniors Marian Kursh and Britteni Williams. The duo experienced 2 Sun Belt titles, and 3 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
As for Delaware, Elena Delle Donne is one of the most dominant basketball players I've ever seen.
She finished with 39 points, and her Blue Hens will definitely make some noise in the NCAA Tournament.
They face 11-seed Kansas in the 2nd round Tuesday.
