CONWAY, AR – Students at UCA gathered Wednesday night to remember Ryan Henderson and Chavares Block, who were shot to death on the campus three years ago.
“Two young men who were in our midst and came to school here never had the chance to graduate, get a job, raise a family,” said Interim President Tom Courtway.
About 50 students attended the candlelight vigil, many of whom were in high school when the shooting happened.
Pastor E.C. Maltbia presided over the vigil. “Tonight, we have joined together as a community, in fact as a family, to remember.”
“It is a blessing to have kids that may not have even been here to addend the memorial and support the school,” said Tamara Henderson, Ryan’s mom. She says she’s overcome with the spirit of life at the vigil. “Remember that two lives were taken, and we never want this to happen again. I say that from my heart because I never want anyone to go through the traumatic experience that we still live through daily.”
A scholarship has been created honoring Henderson and Block. Purple bracelets will go on sale to raise funds for the scholarship. They are inscribed with their initials and the date of the shooting, October 26th, 2008.
