A long time church music minister in Benton could face additional sexual indecency charges.

The Saline County Sheriff tells FOX16 News the investigation into allegations against David Pierce continue.

Pierce had his first court hearing Monday morning. He was still in jail at the 5Pm News but it is possible for him to make bond.

But he can not make the allegations go away. In fact, the investigation is expanding.

56-year old David Pierce appeared in court via closed circuit TV.

A brief hearing before district judge Mike Robinson, Pierce didn't say much when the judge set his bond and ordered him to stay away from minors.

"That means your bond will be set at $25,000 and you'll sign a no contact order, do you have any problem with that?" Robinson said.

Pierce responded "no sir."

"When you know people it just makes it difficult," Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington said. Pennington knows Pierce. Both attend First Baptist Church in Benton. Pierce worked as a music teacher there for 29 years. He was fired Friday after allegations surfaced he had sexual contact with a teenage boy.

Pastor Rick Grant issued a statement Monday afternoon saying:

"During my 20 plus years in the ministry here, this is the most difficult thing I've had to deal with by far."

And the sheriff tells us it's not over yet. Goins says: "is there a sense there could potentially be additional victims?" Pennington says: "yes, there's a possibility there could be."

Pennington says the investigator on the case still has a lot of work to do. "She's interviewing people daily," Pennington says. "She has done that this weekend, she has some setup today as well as tomorrow," Pennington said.

Meaning investigators still don't have a complete picture of the allegations against the church music teacher.

Before Friday, the sheriff said, personally, Pierce had the appearance of being a real great man.

Professionally, the sheriff says the case isn't closed until they've talked to everyone they need to.

Music pastor accused of sex crime

Friday night, the Saline County sheriff announced the arrest of a church music pastor who now faces one charge of sexual indecency with a child.

David Pierce is locked up after what the sheriff calls an outcry from the youth of the church. The sheriff is part of the 22-hundred member congregation at First Baptist in Benton, so when he arrested Pierce Friday afternoon, it was personal. "You know, anytime something like this happens, because I'm a father and a grandparent, it touches home," says Sheriff Bruce Pennington.

The Saline County Sheriff's Department launched its investigation into sex crime allegations against music pastor David Pierce early this week after a teenage boy came forward. "I just want people to be aware that regardless of your stature in this community, we're not going to condone these actions and everyone has to be treated equally," says the sheriff.

Deputies have locked Pierce's office and will get a search warrant to check it out at some point as they continue the investigation.
For now the congregation is coping with the accusations. "I know our church is a strong church and its time to pull together," says Pennington.

Right now, Pierce is in the Saline County Jail. He'll be in court Monday morning.

Statement from Dr. Rick Grant, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Benton,

This is a very sad day for me, for First Baptist Church, its staff, and the congregation. It’s also a sad day for the Pierce family.

I don’t have a lot to share with you at this point. We are trying to digest all of this. I can tell you that David Pierce was the minister of music at First Baptist Church of Benton for 29 years and was terminated. I can tell you that we, as a church, have cooperated with the appropriate authorities.

I can also tell you that I’m personally heartsick over all of this. Our church is in mourning. I ask you to pray for everyone involved.

I know that what David did was not unforgiveable in God's eyes if he truly asks for forgiveness. He is currently living in the flesh here on this earth and while here, I hope that he gets to experience the full measure of consequences for what he has done. There are many more lives which have been altered due to his reckless disregard for human life. These individuals are past the age that the law will seek justice for them. Shame on us all for placing our ministers up as idols. Shame on us if we try to minimize such perversion in God's church.

Evil happens everywhere. I don't care who you are or what you do. EVERYWHERE is human!!!!! Just because someone is held to a higher standard does NOT mean they don't scruggle with the same things a normal person would. It is rediculous and completely unfair that ministers are expected to be perfect. Yes, he made a mistake, a BIG one, but it is not unforgiveable. The kids will have to deal with this for the rest of their lives and thats very very unfortunate, but they can survive this. God is in control and is sovereign. My heart breaks for David and his family and the victims involved. PRAY PRAY PRAY for Gods peace to surround the church and everyone involved. The Pierce family and the victims involved need the love of Jesus more than ever and those of us who believe in Jesus and know what HE stands for need to step up to the plate and love on these people just as Jesus does. Jesus loves EVERYONE, even pedophiles.

It is very sad to hear such things could have happened. Lets just remember that these are just alligations right now. I once was a member of this church and a student under Mr. Pierce and I find this VERY hard to believe and handle. I would NEVER have put this man to be in this situation. Again this is just said that this is going on.

Some are called, some are sent, and some just come....beware of the wolf in sheeps clothing! As sad as this is it does happen all of the time, and more often than not it goes unreported! Unfortunately these children will have to deal with this for the rest of their lives....because they will never be able to trust anyone in church or anywhere else!! I was raped as well as a child...over and over, and I never said anything about it! It never goes away....but what makes me mad the most is that people who molest children blame it on the fact that they were molested as a child!! Bull Crap.....that is more of a reason to protect others and your children from that happening to them!! As for the person who did this family....I do pray for them because it is not there fault, and they will suffer right along with him!! It's not right but people are narrow minded and never see how it does affect all of those involved!!

I too was a victum of sexual assualt many years ago. It happens in all walks of life. I guess the reason it seems worse when a member of a church gets involved is because you would think those people would be dedicated to God and trustworthy. It hurts a lot of people when this happens, especially the victum and their families. In my own church, we would be devastated should something like this happen because 99.9% of us would never ever dream of doing anything like this. No church or any other organization is immune from this kind of insanity. It happens in our schools, our homes and places where children should be safe. Individual in charge of children should be checked thouroughly before they are hired. But we all need to become more active in protecting our children. All parents need to talk to their children about things like this and let them know they need to come straight to the parents and let them know if they detect anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. I did this with my children and I would have been like 'ugly on an ape' if I had ever known that someone was trying to hurt my kids.

am i missing something? the statement about the church being in mourning and the the sexual deviants family hurting!!!! what about the children? they are the ones hurting!!! they will carry it with them to their grave with them. what is wrong with this country? people will stand outside of a clinic to protest abortion, but those same people will not stand up and protest a church... all people whom pray on children should be put to death!! period, point blank, end of discussion... sick of this crap.. maybe it's time for the people to stand up and forget about the politicians, police, and all of the people whom get voted in to office and continue to let these deviants off with a slap on the wrist and anything under 25 years of hard prison time is a slap on the wrist. I live in a home where the only person that lives here that is not a victim of sexual deviants is my son. my wife brutally raped in college --- nothing done about it... i was raped as a child --- nothing done about... stand up -- watch ur kids --- and for god's sake, keep them out of church... teach them yourself. CLEAN UP THE STREETS POLICE, JUDGES, POLITICIANS, OR WE WILL DO IT FOR YOU!!!!!

I'm not suprised. Church members or staff sometimes prey on victims. I'm a survivor of sexual abuse myself from a similar church (and suprisingly not Catholic...abuse occurs in more than Catholic churches).

I'm not suprised. There are a lot of folk out there who use religion to prey on others. I'm a survivor of sexual abuse myself.

I'm always amazed at the positon a person will take to cover-up their true self. Politician, police officer, evangalist, church official..... Were does the evil end?
