FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — The University of Arkansas says it will award an honorary degree to Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton, whose Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has drawn thousands of visitors to northwest Arkansas since it opened last year.

The university says it will present the degree to Walton at the school's commencement ceremony May 12. Walton will receive an honorary doctorate of arts and humane letters from the school.

Walton says she's humbled to receive the honor. She says the university is a "tremendous resource" for the state.

Walton is the youngest daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton. Her Crystal Bridges museum opened with great fanfare in Bentonville last November.
