Cabot, AR - A volunteer fireman is dead after a shooting in Lonoke County which investigators now believe was accidental.

The North Pulaski County Volunteer Fire Chief tells FOX16 that Eric Goforth of the North Pulaski County Volunteer Fire Department died Friday in the shooting.

Detective Brandon Hampton with the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office says Goforth was driving an ATV with another man on the back when a 9mm gun fell out of the passenger's pocket and into a mud puddle.

When the man tried to clear the round from the chamber of the gun, it discharged, sending a bullet through the man's hand and into Goforth's back, according to investigators.

Goforth later died at the hospital.
