LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Plans for the construction of a new bridge are on display. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department is asking for feedback on those plans before coming up with a final design.

Four bridge types are being considered for the new construction. 24 thousand vehicles a day travel over the Broadway Bridge, which is cracking from nearly 100 years of use. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is showing renderings of what a new bridge could look like.

Randy Ort, spokesperson for the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department says all four concepts have different elements and architectural features that could be incorporated into any of the designs.

80 percent of the money to build the new bridge is coming from federal funds, so finding a balance between construction time, design, and cost is important.

Mike Smith works for the city of North Little Rock and says he hopes traffic control during construction will be taken into consideration.

Of the four design concepts, the quickest bridge to build would take 18 months to construct and the cheapest bridge to build would cost around $60 million.

Gip Robertson is retired from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department and says he's worried about the environmental aspects of a new bridge obstructing the views downtown. "The cable stayed design I think is extremely offensive environmentally. The cost is way beyond that which is considered reasonable."

The public seems to prefer a bridge design that enhances the natural landscape and is cost efficient.

The next step is to take all the feedback received from the public and come up with a more detailed architectural plan to present this summer. Construction could begin as soon as 2013.

Design A1: V-Pier

Design B1: Classic

The new bridges look like the current one so why not just leave the old one and stop wasting money for something we already have.

The real mistake is allowing a true MORON named Randy Ort to have anything at all to do with it. He is simply a "yes" man that keeps his head planted between his boss's legs and knows VERY LITTLE about how a highway department is run, he got a friend of mine's son killed due to HIS negligence and simply shrugged it off like it was just another accident.

As a retired towboat Pilot that spend 35 years on the AR river I look for the widest and highest bridge design. I do pity the Pilots that will have to past thru the construction chaos.

What I wonder is how many hungry children could be feed with this money. Or the programs it could fund for them. Tear the POS down sell the scrap and feed and educate our young.

Trust me boogerbreath, where I live is nothing like LR/NLR or Crime Bluff. I understand that crime is everywhere, never disagreed there, but some areas are far worse than others. But one would have to agree that LR/NLR and Pine Bluff are full of wannabe gang bangers and thugs that have nothing better to do then to commit crimes. There is crime where I live, but not a single robbery, rape, murder, violent crime, etc. in years. And we are quiet proud of that. Unlike the above mentioned areas that setting records for violent crimes. You say I am silly at times, but I am only expressing my views, if some agree, great, if some dont, oh well, I could give a crap less if anyone agrees with me, but I think most with sese do.

It will be such a beautiful and expensive bridge connecting two ghettos. The old bridge does need to be replaced, but just put in a bridge, not put in a monument. No one will care more or less if its a typical bridge that gets put in. The tax payers would rather see a less expensive bridge than a overpriced, glorified monument of a bridge.
