You say The Purple Cow and you think purple vanilla milkshakes. It’s a specialty flavor Yarnell’s has supplied for the restaurant for 22 years.

With two stores in Little Rock and one in Hot Springs, The Purple Cow goes through 300 three gallon drums of Yarnell’s a week.

"I think that Yarnell’s going out of business is a close to an era,” says customer Angel Whalen of Little Rock.

And for company president Todd Gold that means coming up with a back up plan.

"We will probably run out of Yarnell’s ice cream by midday Saturday," Gold says. "We do have three locations in Texas and they've used Blue Bell all along for over 10 years. Blue Bell makes the purple vanilla there for us as well too. They have a great product. It's a solution for us, we need product. Its comparable to Yarnell’s, we've tried it."

But no question, after 79 years of Yarnell’s, it is the end of an era.

Whalen raised her purple milkshake glass and said "Sip one for the memories. That's pretty good though, I don't know what is going to happen. It's got to be really good to take their place."

Gold says the total shock of Yarnell’s closing is exemplified by how he found out. After hearing reports of the company’s shuttering, he contacted his Yarnell’s representative to confirm the information. Gold says the representative did not know, finding out instead when Gold called him.

"When people in Arkansas think about purple cow they think Yarnell’s and probably will continue to do so,” Gold says.

But they won't see Yarnell’s much longer.
