Zoning changes proposed for Lake Maumelle watershed

Hundreds of angry property owners from the Lake Maumelle watershed blasted a Pulaski County zoning code proposal at a public hearing Tuesday night. They say it will strip them of their property rights. The planning department says the proposal will protect the drinking water for 400,000 people living in central Arkansas.

Is this the best that you guys can do in way of reporting this story?! "The plan is supposed to protect the watersource by placing restrictions on development....". No mention of the fact that CAW and Pulaski County planning & Development INTEND TO BUILD OVER 36,000 HOMES AROUND THE LAKE?!!! Bringing a population of over 85,000 residents?!! This has NOTHING to do w/ clean water! Come on guys!!! Get off your rump and investigate/report this! For instance: Has anyone asked Van McClendon about his affiliation with a planning/real estate company (Due Dilligence, LLC)?!! Does he stand to gain from this monetarily through his company? Is this the reason he has been shoving this down our throats and trying to paint it as water protection? Have any of you asked why Warren Stepdhens was allowed to build an Ultra-Private golf course and 26,000 Sq Ft club only a few feet from the lake? Or asked why no one regulates CAW...No! What about the endangered wildlife in the area? Does Arkansas REALLY matter to you? VISIT www.watershedhoax.com

In my opinion if they are going to do this to land already owned by someone else then they need to be offering to buy it from them.

Funny how the 2007 plan included the Alotian Club since it is no less than 100 feet from the shore of Lake Maumelle but the new draft does not. I agree with arkunsas this is no less than attempt to prepare the lake for mass development when they are done using the water for drinking in 20 years. (Rumor has it that CAW will stop using it in the next 18) The fact of the matter is that there is no need for this plan unless it is for development since there are already regulations in place to protect the drinking water called: Site Evaluation Tool User Guidance and Documentation For the Lake Maumelle Drainage Basin AND the Pulaski County Subdivision & Development Code. You tell me this isn't a plan for CAW and Stephens to turn this lake into a resort spot after they strip the owners of their rights and lower the property value so they can come in and snatch it up to put millions in their pockets! KEEP FIGHTING LAND OWNERS!!!

What most people are missing in all of this is that the true intentions of this plan is to "ACOMMODATE LARGE-SCALE, PREDOMINATELY RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT" of the watershed -(section 2.3 par A of the Draft Plan). Contrary to the disinformation coming from Van McClendon and the PCP&D board and CAW, watershed property owners are not a bunch of "pig farmers". There is not a single pig farm in the watershed as a matter of fact. We have been excellent stewards of our land long before the lake was built. It is one of the "cleanest reservoirs in the country" according to CAW, USGS and Tetra Tech. The true threat to our drinking water is the mass development that CAW, Pulaski County and Deltic Timber have planned for the watershed under these new zoning laws. If we allow this plan for the watershed to progress, we will be permitting large-scale development of luxury lake view estates that will benefit but a few of our most affluent. Not to mention the urban sprawl, wildlife eradication, deforestation and increased social stratification. www.watershedhoax.com What needs to be asked of Van and the PCPD board is "why the mass development in the watershed at all?" If this is truly about water quality, then why does the DRAFT mandate height requirements and other aesthetic provisions? A plan like this should only be considered on the day they decide to retire Lake Maumelle as our water source. We need to stop this land grab and defend the constitutionally protected property rights of land owners.
