LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Each month, Victory Over Violence will team with Little Rock law firm Rainwater, Holt and Sexton to present a Difference Maker of the Month award. It's the law firm's way of giving back to the community and playing a role in the solution to combat violence.
This month's choice wasn't a difficult choice...
In an effort to make a difference in the community, a local sergeant, along with mentors with the OK Program, are joining forces to make a positive impact on Arkansas' youth.
In a fight to reverse a trend of violent crime in the community, Sgt. Willie Davis and the mentors involved in the OK Program have worked hard to steer the community's youth in a positive direction.
"We are in their schools every day. We go to their homes to see how life is like there. Most importantly, we're here on Saturdays," Sgt. Davis said. "We come together as black men and mentors to show these guys we love and care about them."
In addition to having a supportive place to go, African American youth take part in important discussions, hoping to create change in the neighborhoods where these kids live.
Sgt. Davis has been involved in the program for nearly a decade.
"This is what I'm supposed to do. This is my purpose. I think God put me here for that reason," Sgt. Davis said.
And people have noticed both his effort and the positive impact of the OK Program.
Rainwater, Holt and Sexton wanted to surprise Sgt. Davis with an award. But it won't just be a paper weight on a desk...
"Throw out $1000 there. Oh man, I appreciate that man. That makes my heart glad," Sgt. Davis said.
While Sgt. Davis will make good use of the money by putting it toward things like a trip for the boys, he suggests it's not just about the OK Program.
"I accept this award on behalf of all the other people in the city that's doing what I do, in terms of impacting lives..." Sgt. Davis said.
Which is exactly why this is just the first of many awards recognizing difference makers in the fight for Victory Over Violence.
