Recap: South Florida vs. West Virginia
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Kevin Jones tallied a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, as the West Virginia Mountaineers notched a 50-44 win over South Florida in the regular-season finale for both Big East teams at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
Darryl Bryant shot a perfect 12-of-12 at the foul line and finished with 16 points and four steals for the Mountaineers (19-12, 9-9 Big East), who managed to win despite shooting a dismal 28.8 percent from the floor. WVU can earn a first-round bye in the Big East Tournament with a Seton Hall loss at DePaul this evening.
The Bulls (19-12, 12-6) lost for only the second time at home this season, and in the process spoiled a chance for a double-bye in next week's conference tournament. Instead, they'll be the No. 5 seed. Anthony Collins was the team's only player in double figures, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor.
The teams combined for just 16 first-half field goals. USF shot 1-of-10 from beyond the arc in the opening frame, as the Mountaineers claimed a 24-19 halftime lead.
WVU made only six field goals in the second stanza (25.0 percent) while the Bulls shot 52.6 percent from the floor (10-of-19). However, the Mountaineers went 14-of-16 at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes. USF's Jawanza Poland was whistled for an offensive foul with 39.6 seconds left and his team trailing by two, as WVU regained possession and sealed the outcome with late free throws.
The Mountaineers won with their top three scorers, Jones, Bryant and Deniz Kilicli combining to shoot a mere 10-of-38 from the floor.Game Notes
