CONWAY, AR - University of Central Arkansas senior Tyler Gray earned his second Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday and the second consecutive award for a UCA pitcher. Southland Players of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
Gray, a right hander from Fort Smith Southside, tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout against UT Martin on Saturday, striking out 12 and walking just one. The Bears beat the Skyhawks 3-0 in that game and swept the non-conference series 3-0. Gray threw just 94 pitches, with 70 strikes and struck out at least one batter in all but one inning, closing out the game with his 12th strikeout for the final out of the game.
Gray, who also earned the SLC weekly honor on March 13 after a school record-tying 14 strikeout performance against McNeese State, is second in the league in strikeouts with 81 for the season, is second in earned run average (2.15) and tied for third in innings pitched (62.2), with opponents hitting just .202 against him.
Gray is now second in career strikeouts at UCA with 249, trailing only Matt Whitaker, who had 269 from 2006-08. His season total of 81 is
