Gordon is one of 53 players across the nation to find a place on this year’s watch list for the nation’s top college running back. He is the fourth A-State player to ever receive the preseason recognition, joining David Oku (2013), Reggie Arnold (2007, 2008, 2009) and Jonathan Adams (2000 and 2001).
A 2013 Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference (SBC) selection, Gordon has also been named 2014 preseason All-SBC by USA Today Sports (first team), Athlon Sports (first team), Lindy’s (second team) and Phil Steele’s (third team). Additionally, he has been named Lindy’s “Toughest Player to Bring Down” in the Sun Belt and USA Today Sports’ offensive “Player to Watch” in the league.
The Camden, Miss., native ranked fifth in the conference in rushing as a sophomore with 62.8 yards per game, but second in conference games only with an 86.6 yard average. Gordon recorded 606 of his 754 yards rushing and nine of his 10 rushing scores in league play, while his 6.7 yards per attempt was the second highest in the Sun Belt.
Gordon completed his 2013 campaign with 985 all-purpose yards, the 10th most in the conference. He tallied a career-high three rushing touchdowns in two different games and eclipsed 100 yards rushing a team-high four times, including a career-best 184-yard effort at home against Texas State that stands as the seventh highest total by an A-State player in Centennial Bank Stadium history.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists Nov. 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced Nov. 24. The committee will cast a second vote beginning Dec. 1 to determine the recipient. The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2015.
