Bears Take Series From Tigers With 8-4 Win

- MEMPHIS, TN - The University of Central Arkansas Bears got a complete-game performance from starter Chris Caudle and pounded out 15 hits Sunday afternoon in an 8-4 victory over the Memphis Tigers at FedEdPark.

The Bears (8-5) took the series 2-1 after 17- and 14-inning games on Friday and Saturday. Memphis entered the weekend with an 11-1 record, including road victories at Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Caudle, a junior from Greenwood, improved to 3-1, allowing 13 hits and four earned runs while striking out four. Left fielder Wesley Hoover led the UCA offensive attack, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, while Nate Ferrell, Justin Treece, Charles Deckard and Nick Rougeau had two hits apiece.

The Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Hoover’s two-run single up the middle that scored Doug Votolato and Tyler Langley. UCA added another run in the second on Deckard’s single, a Memphis throwing error and Langley’s sacrifice fly.

UCA made it 5-0 in the third when Hoover and Joey Pinney had RBI singles.

Caudle kept the Tigers (12-3) off the board until the fifth when they got one run on a sacrifice fly and another in the sixth with an RBI double. The Bears got those two runs back in the top of the eighth on Ferrell’s two-run single back up the middle that brought in Votolato and Langley again.

The Tigers put across two runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the margin to 8-4. Caudle, back out for the ninth inning, allowed a one-out base hit down the left-field line but then struck out Jake Little and got Tucker Tubbs to fly to center for the final out.

For the weekend, the UCA pitching staff posted a stellar 1.60 earned-run average over 40 innings, with just 9 walks, 17 strikeouts and 7 earned runs.

The Bears host Creighton University at 3 p.m. Tuesday before opening Southland Conference play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend.
