Gault poured in a game-high 22 points and reached the 20-point plateau for the eighth time in the last 10 games. Fohne blocked three shots to give her 105 in her career, setting a new school record that stood at 103 before the day began.
The Trojans (11-10, 6-5 Sun Belt Conference), who lost at WKU (14-8, 6-5) in January by 26 points, avenged that loss and defending an impressive home-court streak. UALR is now 6-0 in Little Rock in Sun Belt play this season and 9-1 on home court overall. The team has won its last six home games.
Strong efforts on the offensive end and the defensive end contributed to the victory. The Trojans got to the free-throw line more than they had been, shooting 13 of 15 from the line. The team also assisted on seven of its 10 field goals in the first half. UALR did not attempt a 3-pointer in the game and the Lady Toppers 41.2 to 28.6 percent. The Trojans’ defense also held the high-scoring Lady Toppers to just 51 points – their lowest total of the season – and forced 17 WKU turnovers.
Besides Gault’s 22 points, she also added four rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Kiera Clark was the team’s next highest scorer with 10 points and also had nine rebounds, just missing a double-double. Shanity James scored seven and pulled down five points despite playing only 19 minutes, and Sharde' Collins added five points and three assists.
Taylor Ford led a hounding defense that forced 17 turnovers with three steals. She scored six points and dished out three assists. Fohne’s three blocks were also a single-game high for the year. The forward also added two points and three rebounds.
The visiting Hilltoppers scored the first basket of the game, but the Trojans responded with an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead they would never give up. UALR’s lead got to as many as 11 in the half when Clark’s jumper with three minutes left made the score 30-19.
Freshman Di'Mond Jackson stepped to the line and knocked down two free throws with eight seconds remaining to send the Trojans to the locker room up 33-23.
The run continued thanks to a hot-shooting Gault who scored six points in four minutes to help the Trojans stretch their lead to 16 at the first media timeout of the second half.
WKU was able to chip away and get the lead down to seven with just over a minute remaining, but the Trojans answered with a layup by Collins and held on to win by seven.
The Trojans will be back on the hardwood on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Louisiana. The previous meeting between the two teams on Jan. 29 resulted in a 74-60 win for UALR.
