ORU Takes Series With 4-2 Victory Over Bears

- CONWAY, AR - The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles pulled out an important Southland Conference series with the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Sunday, winning the finale 4-2 at Bear Stadium to take the series 2-1.

ORU (25-22, 12-12) broke a tie with UCA for eighth place in the SLC standings, with two weekends remaining on the schedule. The SLC Tournament field will consist of the top eight teams, with the tournament being held at Bear Stadium on May 21-24.

The Golden Eagles went ahead 2-0 with single runs in the second and third innings but the Bears tied it in the bottom of the third. Sophomore catcher Brandon Montalvo led off the inning with his first career home run, a blast that cleared the left-center wall.

Sophomore second baseman Chris Townsend added a two-out triple into the right-field corner and he tied it at 2-2 on Nate Ferrell's RBI single down the left-field line.

ORU went back ahead for good in the fifth, aided by an infield single and a throwing error on the Bears. Matt Brandy's double down the left-field line scored Tyler Boss to make it 3-2. One more insurance run came across for the Golden Eagles in the eighth on Austen Colt's RBI single up the middle.

UCA (23-21, 11-13) put a runner on base in the eighth inning with Carson Dowdle's walk, but left him at second base after a steal. The Bears, who had just seven hits, went in order in the ninth.

Senior center fielder Doug Votolato went 2 for 4 from the leadoff spot for UCA, while Boss, Brandy and Colt had two hits each for ORU. Starter Pepe Gomez (7-3) got the victory for ORU, with Jacob McDavid getting his first save. UCA starter Connor Gilmore (4-3) got the loss, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs in six innings of work.
