LAFAYETTE, LA – A late comeback wasn’t enough for UALR as No. 1 Louisiana finished off a sweep with a 6-3 win at Tigue Moore Field.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (34-4, 14-1 SBC) built a 4-0 lead with four two-out runs against Cameron Allen, the starter for the Trojans (13-20, 3-12 SBC). Austin Pfeiffer ended the shutout threat in the sixth with a solo homer.
UALR put together a late charge in the eighth, but they couldn’t overcome the deficit and suffered the loss. The game finished the Trojans tough week with all four games coming on the road against ranked opponents.
As they did the whole weekend, the Cajuns came up with two-out hits to score runs to build their early lead. In the second inning, it was a bloop single by Greg Davis that plated a run.
Later, Dylan Butler laced a two-out double in the third to give UL a 2-0 lead. Jace Conrad continued the rally with a double to drive in two runs and build a 4-0 Cajun lead.
Allen allowed UL to load the bases after getting the first two batters of the fifth inning out, but stranded them by getting a fly ball to left field to end the inning. Allen pitched five innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four in a losing effort.
Pfeiffer led off UALR’s half of the sixth inning with a home run to left field to cut the deficit to three at 4-1.
However, UL produced another two-out run—this one unearned—off of Cory Malcom. In the seventh the Trojans threw out Tyler Girouard attempting to steal second, but on the play Conrad scored from third to make it 6-1 in UL’s favor.
Malcom finished with 1.1 innings pitched and allowed two runs—one earned—on two hits with two strikeouts. Chase Rousseau one batter and allowed a hit but registered 0.1 innings due to Girouard getting caught attempting to steal.
Ben Crumpton led off the top of the eighth with a single to center and came around to score on a triple by Tanner Rockwell to make it 6-2. Bryson Thionnet followed by ripping a double down the left field line to score Rockwell and cut the deficit to three.
Ethan Schlechte worked the eighth on the mound and allowed a hit, but faced the minimum because Same Vogel threw out Ryan Leonards trying to stretch a single into a double.
Pfeiffer led the Trojans’ offense going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Rockwell’s triple was his third on the year and upped his team-high RBI total to 25. Thionnet’s double moved him into first on the team with nine this season. Justin Steelmon, Drew Merten and Crumpton each added singles for UALR. Crumpton stole second in the ninth for his league-leading 24th stolen base. The steal tied his personal single-season high and moved him into a tie for fifth in UALR’s single-season standings.
After playing four games against ranked teams, all on the road, this week the Trojans will return home for four games. The slate will begin against Louisiana Tech on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Over the weekend, Troy will visit in a crucial Sun Belt series with game one on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
