Two-Run Eighth Propels UCA To 6-4 Victory

- CONWAY, AR - University of Central Arkansas designated hitter Nate Ferrell hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday to propel the Bears to a 6-4 victory over the Missouri State Bears in the series finale at Bear Stadium.

Ferrell’s single to center field scored shortstop Justin Treece and center fielder Doug Votolato to break a 4-4 tie and give the Bears (1-2) their first win of the season. Votolato had reached on a throwing error by the MSU shortstop and Treece followed with a base hit to center. Scott Zimmerle walked to load the bases before MSU reliever Adam Anawalt got a strikeout for the second out of the inning.

Ferrell, who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a run scored, hit the first pitch he saw from Anawalt sharply to center. He was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double after both runners had scored.

Junior transfer Ben Ancheff came on to pitch the ninth for the Bears and set the visiting Bears down in order for his first save. Junior transfer Chris Caudle got the victory with two innings of hitless and scoreless relief. UCA starter Connor Gilmore went six innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 earned runs but left with the game tied at 4-4.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, UCA tied it in the bottom of the second when Ferrell singled, moved to second on Tyler Langley’s sacrifice bunt, went to third on another throwing error by the MSU shortstop and finally scored on Brandon Montalvo’s ground out.

Missouri State went back in front with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, with UCA answering in the bottom of the frame. Langley doubled down the left-field line and scored on Wesley Hoover’s RBI single. After MSU put up another run in the top of the fifth, UCA tied it with two in the bottom. Matt Anderson had a base hit and scored on Zimmerle’s ground out. Chris Townsend followed with a triple into the right-field corner, scoring Treece with the tying run.

Treece went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and is hitting .600 after the opening series. Zimmerle, Montalvo, Townsend and Hoover all had RBI for UCA. UCA pitchers held MSU to just five hits after allowing 13 and 15 in the previous two games. Conor Smith and Tyler Harris both hit home runs for MSU.

UCA faces Wichita State at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Eck Stadium in Wichita.
