UCA Wins Series Finale 8-4 Over SFA

- NACOGDOCHES, TX - The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored the final four runs of the game on Sunday afternoon to take down the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 8-4 in the Southland Conference series finale at Jaycees Field.

The Bears (14-11, 5-4) broke a 4-4 tie with a single run in the seventh, then posted three more runs in the eighth to pull away for the victory. Junior right hander Connor McClain threw six innings for the victory, while senior Bryce Biggerstaff came back from injury to throw the final three scoreless innings for the save.

UCA scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings but SFA tied it with a four-run fifth inning. In the seventh, Doug Votolato singled to center and stole second base. Chris Townsend’s base hit sent Votolato to third before Nate Ferrell single to left field scored the go-ahead run.

In the eighth, the Bears added three runs, all with two outs. Catcher Charles Deckard started the rally with a single to left and Brad Dillenberger followed with a walk. Tyler Langley then double to the gap in right center to bring in two runs, and Votolato came through with another double to scored the final run.

Senior shortstop Justin Treece knocked in a run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly and Scott Zimmerle brought in another with an RBI single. In the fifth, Nate Ferrell had an RBI single and another run came in on a throwing error.

Votolato finished 3 for 4, while Ferrell was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI as UCA out-hit Stephen F. Austin 12-9.

McClain went six innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs, striking out 4 and walking 1. Biggerstaff, who has missed two weekend starts because of injury, allowed just 2 hits in three innings, striking out 2 and walking 1.

UCA returns home for a four-game homestand, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday against UALR at Bear Stadium. Southeastern Louisiana comes to Conway for a three-game SLC series this weekend.
