JONESBORO, AR – Senior Kirk Van Slyke of Arkansas State University has been selected as this week’s College Sports Madness’ Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for his performance in the Red Wolves’ two league victories this past week in an announcement made this Monday (Feb. 24).
Van Slyke averaged 18.5 points (37 pts.) and 5.0 rebounds (10 rebs.) per game in A-State’s two contests last week while connecting on 59.1 percent (13-22) from the floor, which included 77.8 percent (7-9) from beyond three-point field goal line. He made four-of-six (66.7%) at the free throw stripe.
The 6-10 forward poured in a game-high 23 points and grabbed a team-high tying six rebounds in A-State’s 83-60 conference home win over UT Arlington last Thursday (Feb. 20) at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark. Van Slyke made 70 percent (7-10) of his shots from the field and was 87.5 percent (7-8) in three pointers while making both of his two free throws attempts in 37 minutes of action. He followed with 14 points in the Red Wolves’ 73-68 conference home triumph against Texas State this past Saturday (Feb. 22) in 35 minutes before fouling out. Van Slyke, who pulled down four rebounds in the win, made six-of-12 field goals (50 percent) and was two-for-four (50 percent) at the charity stripe.
This season, Van Slyke has registered a team-high 398 points and is averaging a squad-best 15.9 points a contest as a starter in all 25 A-State outings this season to date. He also leads the Red Wolves in blocked shots (29), field goals made (137), free throws made (91), and rebounds (151) while ranking second among the team leaders with a 6.0 rebounds per game average. The native of The Woodlands, Texas, has attained double-figure points in 21 contests this campaign, which includes seven 20 or more single-game point performances.
Van Slyke, who joins senior guard Melvin Johnson III (Dec. 2) as A-State players to receive College Sports Madness’ SBC Player of the Week accolades this season, presently ranks 43rd on the NCAA Division I national statistical leaders list in field goal percentage (54.4%) through Feb. 23 games. He’s also listed 122nd in free throw percentage (82.7%), 199th in points per game (15.9 ppg.), 222nd in blocked shots per game (1.16 bpg.), and 245th in total blocked shots (29) nationally.
Arkansas State, which is currently 16-9 overall and 9-5 in Sun Belt Conference action this season, returns to the court this Tuesday (Feb. 25) night as the Red Wolves entertain instate Lyon College in a non-conference tilt at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
