San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will not make his scheduled start Saturday at Pittsburgh, perhaps with the upcoming All-Star Game in mind.

Mets manager Terry Collins made the announcement prior to Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants, citing a blister on the young phenom's right index finger and an increasing workload as the main factors in the decision.

Collins did say the blister will not affect Harvey's ability for the July 16 Midsummer Classic, which the Mets will be hosting at Citi Field. The 24-year- old is considered a leading candidate to start the game for the National League.

"It's only an inning," Collins told the Mets' official site about the All-Star Game. "If he's going to get in the All-Star Game it's great, because that way when he comes out in the second half, at least he's got some action in the last 10 days."

Harvey earned his first career All-Star nod with a sensational first half in which the right-hander has posted a 7-2 record with a 2.35 earned run average and an NL-best 147 strikeouts through 19 starts. Opponents are hitting just .196 against him this year.

The sophomore sensation has logged 130 innings thus far, however, just 39 1/3 less than what he accumulated between the minors and majors last season. The Mets plan to place Harvey on an innings restriction, though Collins said the amount has yet to be determined.

"We've got to skip him sooner or later. This is nothing new," said Collins. "If he pitches in the All-Star Game, he'll be ready for it. But just for us as an organization, we need to back him off, and we thought now would be a good time."

Carlos Torres will be taken out of his long relief role to fill Harvey's spot in Saturday's clash with the Pirates.
