Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Suns and head coach Alvin Gentry have agreed to part ways.

Gentry was in the final year of a contract extension he signed prior to the 2010-11 season. The Suns are off to a dismal 13-28 start this year after missing the playoffs each of the past two seasons.

The Suns, who don't play again until next Wednesday, said an interim coach will be named within the next 24-to-48 hours.

Gentry became the Suns' interim coach in February 2009 after Terry Porter was fired and took over on a full-time basis on May 9, 2009. The Suns were 158-144 in his five-plus seasons on the bench, earning one playoff appearance.

The highlight of Gentry's tenure was the 2009-10 season. The Suns finished 54-28 that year and made a run to the Western Conference finals, falling to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.
