(Sports Network) - The Doc Rivers-to-Clippers saga appears to have been rekindled, with a deal reportedly now in place following days of negotiating.

According to a report by Yahoo!Sports, Los Angeles reached an agreement in principle on Sunday to send an unprotected 2015 first-round draft pick to the Boston Celtics for the rights to hire Rivers as its head coach.

The report stated Rivers has agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract with the Clippers. The NBA still needs to approve the deal.

Talks on a proposed trade between the clubs that had also involved Kevin Garnett going to the Clippers had broken down earlier in the week.

Rivers, 51, has served as Boston's head coach since 2004 and guided the storied franchise to the 2008 NBA title.

By bringing in Rivers, the Clippers are hoping to entice star free-agent guard Chris Paul to sign a contract extension.

Los Angeles is trying to fill the coaching vacancy created when Vinny Del Negro was not offered a new contract after three seasons.
