North Attleboro, MA (Sports Network) - New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was taken into custody by police on Wednesday morning.

Hernandez, dressed in a white T-shirt and shorts, was led away from his home in handcuffs by officers at 8:45 a.m. ET.

It was unclear what charge was being brought against Hernandez, although the Massachusetts state police said via Twitter that a charge would not be released until it is presented in court. He will be arraigned on Wednesday.

The arrest comes nine days after the body of Odin Lloyd was found near Hernandez's home. Police were investigating Lloyd's death as a homicide and searched Hernandez's home a few times last week.

Last week, FOX-25 in Boston cited a law enforcement source as saying that Hernandez and Lloyd were with two other men at a bar in Boston on the night of the homicide and left together in a vehicle driven by Hernandez. The TV station also said Hernandez's neighbors heard gunshots between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. ET on Monday morning.

ABC News last Thursday, citing an investigator with knowledge of the case, reported that Hernandez intentionally destroyed a home security system within his house and turned over a broken cell phone to police. He also hired a cleaning service to clean his mansion on Monday, according to the source.

Reports had indicated that an arrest warrant for obstruction of justice was at least drawn up last Friday.

Sports Illustrated first broke the story last Tuesday, saying Hernandez was questioned by Massachusetts state police in its investigation. According to SI.com, police connected a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban rented in Hernandez's name with the homicide of Lloyd.

Hernandez has spent three seasons with the Patriots. He set career highs of 79 catches, 910 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during his Pro Bowl season of 2011, then played in just 10 games due to injuries last year and finished with 51 receptions for 483 yards with five touchdowns.
