Melville, NY (Sports Network) - New York Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather will undergo surgery for prostate cancer.

Newsday cited sources close to the 69-year-old, saying he will have the procedure on Thursday at an unnamed hospital in New York, then resume his duties after a short stay.

Rangers assistant general manager Jeff Gorton subbed for Sather as the league's 30 GM's met in Toronto on Wednesday.

Despite the high-profile offseason acquisition of Rick Nash, New York is currently in a battle for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Sather has served as the Rangers' GM since June of 2000.
