FAYETTEVILLE, AR – The University of Arkansas baseball team is ranked 25th in the Baseball America Preseason Top 25 released Monday.
Arkansas advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight season in 2013, one of seven schools in the country to play in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last 12 years, and was ranked 18th in the final national poll. The Razorbacks concluded last season with a 39-22 record after advancing to the regional final in the Manhattan Regional. Arkansas won seven of 10 SEC series for the first time since 2004 and finished the year with an 18-11 mark in conference play.
The Razorbacks had a school-record and NCAA-high 11 players taken in the 2013 MLB Draft and lead the SEC with 27 debut student-athletes on this year’s team. The returners are led by junior second baseman Brian Anderson, who was a second-team All-SEC performer last season and was named a second-team preseason All-American by Perfect Game last week. Arkansas also returns team captains Jalen Beeks, Tyler Spoon and Jake Wise. Spoon was named a Freshman All-American and to the all-tournament teams following the SEC Tournament and NCAA Manhattan Regional last season. Beeks made a team-high 29 appearances and earned a 6-2 record with a 2.20 ERA while holding opponents to a .224 batting average. Wise, the team’s only senior in 2014, is a team captain for the second straight year. He saw action in 57 games, including 52 starts, in 2013 and was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List.
Arkansas opens its 2014 season Feb. 14 at home against Appalachian State. The Razorbacks and Mountaineers play a three-game weekend series with game times of 3:05 p.m. Friday, 12:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
