John L. Smith confirmed today that quarterback Brandon Mitchell has been working out at wide receiver during offseason workouts. With Brandon Allen emerging as the backup to Tyler Wilson, Mitchell may never see the field if not for a position change.

The junior from Louisiana has been a solid teammate and is one of the best athletes on the team, which makes the move to wideout less experimental and more critical. His size and strength could pose problems for undersized defensive backs and with the status of Marquel Wade and Mardracus Humphrey unknown - Mitchell provides much needed depth at a thin spot.

He’s proven to be a team first guy, whether it was being forced to play power forward in a shooting guards body for the basketball team and now giving up the glamour position in football for one he’s never played before. But when you have potential play making ability like Mitchell does, just getting him anywhere on the field is the priority.
