Browning named new SAU Coach

Southern Arkansas Associate Head Coach Steve Browning has been promoted and becomes the 10th head coach to lead the Muleriders since 1950.
Following seven years at Southern Arkansas and the past five as head coach of the Mulerider baseball program, Allen Gum has resigned to accept the position of head coach at Central Arkansas, announced Tuesday by SAU Director of Athletics Jay Adcox. Southern Arkansas Associate Head Coach Steve Browning has been promoted and becomes the 10th head coach to lead the Muleriders since 1950.

After serving two years at SAU as an assistant to former coach Mike Godfrey, Gum went 226-68 (.769) over his five seasons at the helm, leading Southern Arkansas to its first two Gulf South Conference championships, two West Division titles, four NCAA region tournament appearances, including two consecutive top seeds, and the national No. 1 ranking in each of the last three seasons.

“I truly appreciate Southern Arkansas, Coach (Jay) Adcox and (President) Dr. (David) Rankin for giving me the opportunity five years ago to become the head coach at SAU,” stated Gum. “It’s been seven great years down here and the university and community have been a huge part of mine and my family’s lives…a lot of great memories and I’ll miss SAU, Magnolia and the people.”

Adcox and Rankin echoed each others comments in being proud of and excited for Gum and his family.

“Allen accomplished career goals for himself and this program and we wish him well in his move up to (NCAA) Division I,” said Adcox. “Not only is he a great coach, but a great man as well.”

Rankin voiced a similar sentiment, “We wish Coach Gum the very best in his new challenges and are sad to see him go. He’s been a great leader and asset to our baseball program.”

Browning has been associated with the Mulerider baseball program for the past 12 years, serving the last five as an assistant and as associate head coach this past season. He was a two-year starting outfielder for SAU in 1999-2000 and was a student and graduate assistant the next five years.

Browning has assisted in the daily operations of the program and has worked extensively with recruiting through the years. He received his B.S.E. in health, kinesiology and recreation from SAU in 2001 and holds three M.Ed. degrees from the university.

“I’m honored with the opportunity to take over such a high-caliber program and I appreciate the chance from Dr. Rankin and Coach Adcox to be the head coach where I played at,” stated Browning. “I want to thank (former) Coach Steve Goodheart for the foundation he laid in building SAU baseball, Coach Mike Godfrey for the two years I had under him, and of course, Coach Gum for allowing me to stay five years ago and all he’s done to continue and further the success of Mulerider baseball.”

“We’re excited about Coach Browning taking the reins of this outstanding program as he moves towards new accomplishments,” added Rankin. “We’re certainly looking forward to working with him.”

“Brownie’s ready…he’ll do a great job,” summarized Gum.
