Coaches Pick UCA 6th in the Nation

The University of Central Arkansas Bears were the sixth pick in the 2013 FCS Coaches Preseason Poll released Tuesday.
CONWAY, AR - The University of Central Arkansas Bears were the sixth pick in the 2013 FCS Coaches Preseason Poll released Tuesday.

The Bears, who finished 9-3 last season and were co-champions of the Southland Conference, were 10th in the final FCS Coaches poll of last season.

“This ranking is certainly a new benchmark for our football program,’ said UCA head coach Clint Conque. “It’s more of a recognition of success from the last several years at the FCS Division I level. Even though we return 16 starters in 2013, this is a new year with a new team and new leadership.

“We have to show the maturity to focus on our team and our process. These players have chosen to play here to compete for championships. We need to embrace internal and external expectations by how we prepare and compete on game day.’

Conque, the winningest coach in UCA history with 98 victories, will be leading the Bears for the 14th season. UCA has won nine games and advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

“A Top 10 ranking like this is something that energizes our fan base and continues to bring record crowds to Estes Stadium in the fall,’ said Conque. “We’re excited about this upcoming season. We have five teams on our schedule either ranked or receiving votes in the poll. It should be another exciting season of UCA football.’
