ARLINGTON, TX – UALR (18-22) plated four runs to even the score in the bottom of the eighth inning, but UT Arlington (22-19) scored the game-winning run on an RBI single by Travis Sibley in the bottom of the ninth to win a 5-4 decision on Wednesday at Clay Gould Ballpark. UTA starter Keegan Hucul earned a no decision but surrendered no runs on just one hit over the first 6.1 innings of work.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, UALR tied the game with four runs on two hits hits. Junior Kaleb Jobe led off the inning with a walk, and back-to-back singles by sophomore Sam Vogel and senior Myles Parma loaded the bases for the Trojans before a single out had been recorded. The Trojans scored their first run and all runners advanced after junior Bryson Thionnet was hit by John Beck’s first pitch of the at-bat. Junior Ben Crumpton drove in Vogel on a fielder’s choice to make it 4-2, and Parma came home on a throwing error by the UTA second baseman. A sac fly off the bat of junior Austin Pfeiffer allowed Crumpton to tag and score, tying the game at 4-all.

The Mavs nearly retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth. UTA loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch with just one out recorded. The next batter, Ryan Walker, hit a grounder to first that senior John Clark fielded and threw straight home to get the lead runner out at the plate. Buckley was then able to get Derek Miller to groundout to third for the final out of the inning.

After UALR went scoreless in the top of the ninth, UTA was able to plate the game-winning run on two hits and an error in the bottom half of the frame. Justin Copeland ripped a one-out single to left before moving to second on a wild pitch. Senior Tyler Buckley was able to get Brandon Lawrence out on strikes for the second out of the inning, but Darien McLemore drew a walk and Peter Cuomo reached base on an error by Burk to load the bases and keep the Mavs’ hopes alive. Sibley then ripped an RBI single to left that scored Copeland for the game-winning run.

Daniel Milliman earned the win for the Mavs after coming on to record the final out in the top of the ninth. Buckley worked the final 1.2 frames for the Trojans, surrendering one unearned run on two hits to pick up the loss. Starter Ethan Schlechte gave up three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.

The UALR offense managed just four hits in the contest, as Pfeiffer, senior Blake Johnson, Vogel and Parma all finished the contest with a hit apiece.

UTA plated its first run in the bottom of the third, when a pair of two-out hits gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead. After Walker reached on a bunt single, Miller ripped a double down the left field line that brought Walker home for the first run of the game.

UT Arlington added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sibley hit a one-out single before moving to second on a groundout by Daniel Garcia. Walker’s RBI single to right center plated Sibley to make it 2-0, while another single by Miller later in the frame scored Walker to put UTA up 3-0. A solo homer by Lawrence in the bottom of the sixth gave the Mavs a 4-0 cushion.

UALR returns to action with a three-game series against Western Kentucky at Gary Hogan Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
